  1. Why Do You Blog – bloggers must have a reason to
    do what they do. There should be passion and commitment
    when putting fingers to keyboard. Why you blog is a very
    important statement and should have a definite answer and
    purpose.
    During the blogging process “why” may change just as
    content changes, every blogger should have an answer
    as to Why Do You Blog.

    2. Who Is Your Demographic – an important element
    to go along with Why is; Who is your demographic?
    Is there an age group, gender, nationality, lifestyle,
    culture or specific group you want to connect with?
    People enjoy having a connection with bloggers. Any
    successful blogger knows who their audience is and
    tries to give them what they need and to provide
    relevant content.

    3. What Type of Content Do You Share – sharing is
    very important.
    You want your audience to understand that you are sharing
    a part of yourself with them. You’re not thrusting things
    down their throat, but providing something that they need
    or as you grow in your writing giving your readers something
    they think they need. Create the atmosphere of sharing
    which helps in receiving feedback from the
    reader/viewer.

    4. How Do You Support Your Brand
    Do you have a domain name, are you using a free site, is
    there a lot of advertising, is there adult content, video,
    audio, and multimedia?
    Supporting your content on a platform requires some
    research on your part to validate you and build your
    Brand. In the educational, political, and business
    environments you have to backup what you have stated
    with dynamic information links, quotes, and data.
    In your blogging you’re competing with traditional media
    so go that extra step to help readers understand where
    you’re coming from, how it can help them and where else
    they can go for additional resources.

    5. Do You Use Photos, Video, Graphics – The power of
    a picture, video or multimedia element can never be under
    estimated. If there is a video that can be used or you create
    your own do it. This provides an extra element to attract
    and keep readers to your content.
    Search Engine Optimization(SEO) does need help with text
    (words), but additional elements that provide audio
    (podcasting), video (YouTube) and multimedia to create an
    interactive platform. Never be scared to branch off into
    new areas to help engage and excite your readers.

    6. Do You Offer A Service – What can you provide your
    audience? What type of service or services do you have?
    The popular blogs of relationship building, natural hair, nails
    (hands and feet) provide a service that can be seen and is
    engaging.
    There is a service that results can be seen. Think hard on
    what service you can provide if this is your choice. Be sure
    that you can keep your customers happy.

    7. Do You Evolve – One of the important things about
    blogging is keeping and expanding your audience, that
    means evolving.
    No blog stays the same just as people change, there is an
    evolutionary process that writers go through. Just as age
    and maturity happens so should a bloggers content evolve
    because their readers evolve and change. What you wrote
    3 years ago will not be of the same interest for your readers
    now. Their lives have evolved (changed) so as a blogger
    your content must evolve also.

    8. Do You Have a Brand – Can you Brand yourself to
    the public?
    What are you known for, what does the title of your Blog
    bring thoughts and feelings of? Branding is important
    because of the interest it generates in readership. Creating
    a Brand allows for Marketability and potential profits.
    Branding shows you, who you are so the public will make
    that connection.

    9. Can You Be Marketable – to make money is only one
    important aspects of blogging. Eventually a blogger considers
    how can they make money so must be wise in how they Market
    their content.
    This may take a team to get the word out about you and
    promote what you are doing. Social Media tools are diverse
    this must be strategic in application.
    These elements are worth considering and using as a
    guide to anyone blogging. Your blogging content, goals,
    designs and objectives will change the more you blog so be
    ready to make adjustments and evolve to keep pace and
    stay important enough to be followed, read, quoted, inspiring,
    engaged and influential.

Attending any WordCamp should not just be an esoteric experience.
Being a part of WordCamp should be an experience that allows
for the spirit of innovation, the imagination of creativity and the
thirst for unquenchable knowledge to grab hold of a person’s
mind. Applying new knowledge to current/past knowledge, being
able to find new ways to create, share and transport knowledge
that can be applied to the diversity of life.
The body is a vessel that carries the brain, the heart and other
physical organs, but it also transports the spirit of passions and
the dreams of ingenuity and imagination. Technology does not
dwell in a sterile one dimensional environment, technology
embraces the diversity of the firing of the synapsis in the brain.
The thoughts that are as powerful as bursts of lighting and
applied linguistic agility.
Thoughts are electrical impulses that give rise to reality and
an entrance to the depths of the mind.
When a person thinks each thought is the result of a stimuli
that can result from a simple smell, a taste, a sound or even
a physical feeling. The site of a face can create a myriad of
emotions that can be pleasing, frightening, or overwhelming.
Technology is part of the mental and emotional selves that we
as humans create and share in our world. When attending a
WordCamp a person cannot just stay within themselves they
must venture out and connect, collaborate and create the
foundation of building real and lasting relationships.
WordCamp is an environment resulting from a seemingly
simple application of WordPress, an online environment that
allows for mental agility, emotional creativity and innovation
in an environment that allows the synapsis of our brain to
think, dream, speculate, consider, communicate, collaborate,
calculate and connect.
The ability for humans using technology to emerge from the
binary melting pot of coding to create the ability to communicate
on diverse levels. Seeking parity is not the priority, but the
transcending of current realities that have limited physical
actions. The mind knows no limitations only those created
by limited imaginations and self-perceived confines in a world
of rules and realities begging to be broken.
What is WordCamp; not just a simple or mundane explanation,
it is being adapted because the men, women, boys, girls and
diversity of nations, cultures, and ideologies are opening digital
doorways to a matrix of dynamic and infinite possibilities of
thinking, feeling, creating, innovation and being. Open Source
is an opening for the mind to fly though at light speed without
limitations to achieve wonders on digital platforms.
WordCamp and Building Your Linguistic Agility is requiring
modifying languages to adapt to new forms of communication
outside the spectrum of physical verbiage, it is demanding the
ability to create new languages that binary coding and human
thoughts are equal partners in communication.
When attending a WordCamp take the time to listen to the
conversations, attempt to enter into the minds of programmers,
developers, graphic artists, users, developers and others as
they share experiences that only those that apply WordPress
can only understand. Open the source of creativity that lives
and grows in minds that enjoy creativity, imagination and the
challenge of coding that machines only listen to.
Challenging people to share their stories is the easy part,
having people accepting the challenge to apply their mental
synapsis is the challenge and my quest.

What does it take to be a blogger and social media
influencer? The ability to create content and share
on Social Media platforms is a process to influence
thinking, decisions and actions of readers. To
develop a personal Brand that exemplifies the
spirit of HBCUs. Students need the exposure and the
opportunity to network with those in the industries
they are interested in. To become serious in their
quest for success and growth.
Exposure is important and networking is vital
to being seen digitally and socially.

1. Write as if the world is going to view your content
and provide feedback. When people read your blogs
they should understand your passion and the direction
you are going.
2. When blogging take the time to read, review, rewrite,
and revise what you have written. Grammar and spelling
count a great deal.
3. Reflection is important, it is vital to think on your
writings and consider your desired end result, what is
your mission and vision for your content?
4. Embrace the diversity of the world, it expands your
ability to connect and engage with the diversity of your
audience. Your blogs should be able to reach out to
diverse audiences and make a connection.
5. Attend conferences that allow for sharing of ideas
and concepts. No blogger is an island to themselves.
6. When writing remember your building relationships
with others. This is important to establish connectivity
and validity.
7. Read writers that you respect and admire, this
inspires your creativity and literary growth.
8. Storytelling paints a picture, so use words that
encourage the imagination and inspire consistent
content development. Be careful of using cultural
or street language, think about the audience and their
interests.
9. When writing understand that writing is a process,
the more you write the better you get.
10. Don’t be afraid to submit your blogs to newspapers
to be published. You never know who will publish your
works. Even if you are rejected 100 times 101 might be
the one that gets you an awesome gig.
11. Keep your passion and excitement about your writing,
it is an extension of who you are.
12. Write for enjoyment and a purpose.
13. Your writing is an important part of who you are,
what you are growing into and how to expand your voice.
14. HBCU students continue to grow in your field, you may
start off in a tradition blog, be willing to
incorporate Microblogging, Podcasting, Vblogging and
other technologies that reach diverse audiences.
15. Never doubt your ability to grow beyond where you are.
16. Don’t blog when you are emotional, your judgement will
be blurred.
17. Never use your blog to spread racism, profanity,
prejudice, hate, sexism or involve in Sexting. This will
damage your Brand and your reputation.
18. Be careful of who you associate with, this may influence
future internships and scholarships.
19. Never let random people take your picture, they can be
used later against you.
20. Freedom of speech is a constitutional right until you
slander, accuse, threaten and demean others.
21. Be careful and protect your intellectual property, don’t
use company or school based hardware/software to store
blogs, videos or photos.

A blogger is a life-long journey and should be a life
long adventure.

Attending WordCampUSA Philly was a great
opportunity to join over 1800 bloggers, developers,
programmers, users and even educators.
Joining together to learn, share, and collaborate
on a platform that allows for dynamic content to
be posted in diverse digital environments.

Attending with my students Joshua Rodriguez
a junior studying Biology and Johnathan Gregory
a junior studying elementary education, both students
attending Edward Waters College. Provided an opportunity
to apply what they are learning in the classroom in
real world situations.
These situations are not just educational, but involves
business, commerce and entrepreneurial opportunities.

Edward Waters College an HBCU building leaders in
diverse disciplines is working to build content creators
and innovators. In order for this to be successful students
must be exposed to industry leaders, developers and
programmers and marketers.
Conferences like WordCamp allow for exposure, it
encourages interaction and engagement. If students are
not involved they lose the chance to be inspired and
encouraged to think beyond their current community and
even economic level.

Learning from conferences is Dope and Lit, more students
of color and culture need to have the opportunity to
join in on the discussions to learn and contribute. To move
beyond consumers to change into developers.

HBCU – Historic Black Colleges and Universities
should continue to prioritize learning on a foundation
level to liberate the thinking of the application and
integration of technology to produce not just consume.
Students of color and culture should not follow the words
of those who want to limit the abilities of them, because
students of color and culture and African students are
smart creatives, dynamic innovators and embrace
entrepreneurialism that opens doors to build people
and nations.  My students and I will take back to
our schools, our communities and our peers new knowledge
to share, to inspire, to ignite the fires of discovery that
change the way children, youth, teens and even young
adults see themselves.
“Children don’t care what you know, so long as they know
that you care,” is a quote the Jon Gregory shared with me
from attending EdCamp NASBE, it applies here as well.
We must share, encourage, engage, inspire, influence,
ignite and kindle the joy for learning so students will be
life-long learners to build a better tomorrow.

HBCU students should attend conferences, workshops,
seminars, meetups, EdCamps, WordCamps, Bar Camps,
and other technology events. If the mindset does not
change children of color and culture will find themselves
unemployable or under-employed in dead end careers and
jobs. This is economic and even political self destruction,
the lack of education creates a lack of economic and
political power.

Attending any #WordCamp is valuable and influences
the ability to create content that is engaging and
empowering. WordCamp is associated with writing,
blogging and web development platforms which are
used globally. The spread of digital content influences
the thinking and actions of viewers and readers.
The simplicity of #WordPress allows even youth, teens
and young adults to develop dynamic sites and
potential reader interactivity. This is #DOPE
The recent WordCamp in Orlando, Florida focused on
the use of WordPress, its widgets, graphics, analytics,
domain development, Branding and online content
development.

A digital application that is “what you see is what you
get,” and makes web/content development an enjoyable
and fun process. Developing ideas, stories, and innovation
on a literary level.
It is easier now more than ever for people to build
quality web sites for blogging, business, sharing
information, commerce, content innovation and
sharing of family events. A few strokes of the keys,
registration, selecting a template, deciding what
to call your site, selecting photos and posting
content and you’re ready to go. So easy that even
children are doing it, and doing it well. That is #DOPE!

The beauty of using WordPress is its’ ease of use
similar to Microsoft Word or even PowerPoint. All
that is needed is a basic understanding of using a
word processing application; some creativity and
a basic grasp of graphics and photos allows users
to start and publish content.

In a world of competition to be published, recognized,
followed, obtaining viral status, in an age where in
higher education the “publish or perish” mentality is
still strong. Writing brings notoriety and respect,
and it encourages intellectual thought and the
engagement of intellectualism. WordPress provides
the platform and the tools to promote Branding and
developing a marketing strategy to obtain readers
and viewers.

WordCamp conferences are global events that
encourage participation by all walks of life and skill levels.
Using WordPress does not require a college degree or a
programming certificate, just a desire to share content
in diverse ways using web development tools coordinated
with text, photos, graphics and widgets that allow the
web site to come alive and provide a unique functionality.
